About the Artist

Jonathan Matthews

Jonathan Matthews is an award winning artist and teacher living in Montgomery, Alabama. His work is in homes across the southeastern United States and he has participated in exhibitions around the country and in Europe. Though he discovered painting by accident, he began drawing at an early age, finding inspiration in the great classical artists of the past (and in the pages of Marvel comics). It wasn't until he discovered the work of renowned Norwegian figurative painter, Odd Nerdrum, that he decided to devote his life to painting. After an invitation to study at the Nerdrum School he was able to continue his training in Nerdrum's studios in Norway and Paris.

Now Jonathan spends his time painting commissioned portraits as well as paintings and drawings for gallery sale.
